FAQs

How does this work?

The Junior League of Pelham has connected with multiple local social services and other community-based organizations that provide direct services and have deep relationships with populations in and around Pelham. We rely on these organizations to identify families that have significant needs and are open to conversations with families willing to give. Once we have identified those families and understood their current needs, we list them on this website. These families are mainly in lower Westchester and Yonkers.

Read about the families and let us know if you are interested in connecting. A volunteer from the Junior League will start the process of putting you and the matched family in touch. This Pelham Cares initiative intends to nurture an environment where social exchanges are valued as much as financial ones. In that spirit, we hope you take advantage of reaching out and calling the matched family.  However, you may, of course, elect to connect anonymously.

Your contribution can be to meet a one-time specific need or you may provide ongoing support. Please note, we can accommodate purchases on behalf of the family (e.g. groceries, household needs), paying bills on behalf of the family and/or contributing gift cards; cash donations are not permissible.

How were these families identified?

The Junior League of Pelham has connected with multiple local social services and other community-based organizations that provide direct services to many populations in and around Pelham. We rely on these organizations to identify families (mainly in lower Westchester and Yonkers) that would be a good fit for this program.

What am I committed to contribute?

You may elect to make a one-time specific contribution or provide ongoing support. It’s really up to you what you want to give and how you want to give.  We only ask that you fulfill your initial election.

Please note, we can accommodate purchases on behalf of the family (e.g. groceries, household needs), paying bills on behalf of the family and/or contributing gift cards; cash donations are not permissible. Beyond that, it’s entirely up to you and the family. We encourage flexibility and creativity.

Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?

We are not providing tax receipts at this time for your donations. We do not permit cash donations – solely purchases on behalf of the family (e.g. groceries, household needs), paying bills on behalf of the family and/or contributing gift cards.

Can I elect to remain anonymous?

Of course. When you first contact us, you will have the option to remain anonymous. While the goal of this program is to help build relationships, we also welcome anonymous donations.

What do I say when I first contact the matched family?

Simply mention that you are calling with Pelham Cares. Our volunteers will have already contacted the family to let them know you will be reaching out.

More often than not, matched families will be grateful for the support you are willing to provide and the conversation naturally lends itself to sharing your stories.

Be open to receiving as well. Based on our own experiences, the families we have been put in touch with have been so grateful for the initial contributions that they are also looking to give back. In our pilot effort, the donor was gifted some glow sticks and bubble wands for her children!

I am uncomfortable with my family. What do I do?

Contact Us so that we can find another donor family to assist. The program is about creating opportunities for genuine relationships, but do not feel obligated to continue if you are in an uncomfortable situation.
